Niche Appeal for Bombardierís 90-seat Q400 Turboprop
Posted: 2016 Feb 23

Targeting the limits of capacity possible on a twin-engined passenger turboprop aircraft. Bombardier announced at the show, the launch of a new variant of its popular Q400 turboprop regional transport aircraft (RTA). The new 90 seater Q400 version which will be available from 2018, will be the world’s only commercial turboprop capable of carrying 90 passengers. Speaking at the launch announcement at the show, Patrick Baudis, Vice President, Marketing, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft, says “We are witnessing growth in the number of passengers per departure in the turboprop market and Bombardieris responding with a 90-seat Q400 aircraft - a new segment solution ideally suited for current and future short-haul and high demand markets. ”No major structural changes have been made to the airframe of the Q400 for the new 90 seater variant, which will also be able to carry an additional 1000 kg of payload. Maintenance requirements have also reduced with the A-Check and C-Check intervals now increasing from 600/6,000 to800/8,000 flight hours. This will result in the aircraft being able to fly 270 extra days before being required to undergo a C-check. Bombardier calculates an additional value of over $8 million from the higher seat capacity. This is as a result of the Q400 being accommodate up to 12 to 14 seats more, which deliver a 20 per cent cash operating cost advantage per seat, and over 30 percent higher speed. The Q400 is also much faster than its competition, up to 160 km/h faster than conventional turboprops. The larger seat capacity family is also helped by the spacious cabin, which has large windows, LED lighting, large overhead bins for luggage stowage. More than 60 operators and owners across 40 countries, operate the Q400 family of aircraft, which has logged more than 6.7million flight hours and transported more than 413 million passengers. Bombardier has recorded firm orders for a total of 547 Q400 aircraft.
