Passengers departing from New Zealand’s Auckland International Airport on Air New Zealand will experience a faster check-in process with the airline introducing new self-service bag drops featuring biometric technology for the first time anywhere in the world. Using the new biometric technology, passengers have to scan their passports and boarding passes, following which a biometric camera verifies their identities. The passenger is then asked to place their bag on the scale to be weighed before they’re sent through to the airline’s baggage handling system.
The airline’s existing online check-in option and the self-service kiosks in the terminal, are now complemented with the new self-service bag drop allowing customers to take total control of their check-in experience. The airline says that five new automatic self-service bag drops are already available at Auckland International Airport and an additional eight are planned for installation in early 2016.
“We can now streamline the check-in process for our customers at Auckland International Airport and provide a more seamless airport journey. It will reduce the time it takes for our customers to check in and free up our airport team to interact with customers and support them through the self-service process should they require assistance,” says John Whittaker Air New Zealand Group General Manager Airports.
