First Turbine Center Frame for GE9X Completed by MTU Aero Engines
Posted: 2016 Feb 06

The first development turbine center frame (TCF) to go into the GE9X engine, has been completed in record time by MTU Aero Engines in Munich. MTU has a four percent stake in the GE9X program and expects to generate revenues totalling approximately four billion euros over the life of the program.

Dr. Jörg Henne, Senior Vice President Engineering and Technology said, “In this engine program, we are not only responsible for the manufacture of the TCF, but also assumed responsibility for its development right from the outset.” The responsibility for the development and production of the GE9X, was undertaken by MTU in July 2014.

The turbine center frame is essentially a duct for the hot gases flowing from the high-pressure turbine into the low-pressure turbine. A highly engineered engine component, the TCF is manufactured to tight tolerances and serves a multitude of functions. “Starting from the basic architecture of the TCF for the GEnx, we’ve made some comprehensive optimizations,” says Henne. “These improvements include enhanced constructions and a new suspension concept for the first LPT vane.”

The new GE9X engine is the sole powerplant for the Boeing 777X and will be the most fuel-efficient engine ever produced by GE Aviation on a per-pounds-of-thrust basis, delivering in excess of 100,000 pounds of thrust. The first engine run for the GE9X is scheduled for spring this year and an entry into service date of 2020 has been kept.
