The keel laying ceremony for the third Littoral Combat Ship (“LCS”) has been held by Malaysia’s Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (“BN Shipyard”), which is building the futuristic vessels for the Royal Malaysian Navy (“RMN”).

Keel laying of ships marks the commencement of the joining process of blocks that make up the ship, utilising a modular construction approach.

The second LCS is planned to be launched into water in October 2018, while the keel laying ceremony for the fourth LCSis scheduled to take place in the second quarter of 2018.

YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor, Executive Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of BHIC and Managing Director of BN Shipyard, said, “The keel laying ceremony of the third LCS is a momentous milestone for us and a testament to BN Shipyard’s ability to undertake this complex task and its unwavering commitment to deliver this strategic asset for the nation’s maritime defense.”

“The LCS is one of pillars of RMN’s 15 to 5 Transformation Plan to reduce the number of its asset classes from 15 to 5 to suit the current economic times while ensuring its fleet is well maintained and can safeguard the maritime interests of the nation,” said Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Ramli.

The RMN has a total of six LCS’ on order and the fourth LCS is already taking shape.

All six LCS are to be delivered to the RMN by 2023 at a total cost of RM9 billion.

The contract awarded by the Government of Malaysia to BN Shipyard involves local design, engineering and integration works. The vessels will be equipped with superior four-dimensional warfare capabilities for electronic, air, surface and underwater threats, integrated with advanced operating systems.

The LCS will also feature state-of-the-art stealth capability that minimises the vessel’s visibility and detection probability.
